School admission appeals

If your application for a school place is refused you have the right of appeal against this decision to an independent appeal panel. This is known as a school admission appeal.

You can only appeal if you have a letter that states your child has been refused a place.

To appeal you need to complete a form. The letter telling you that your application has been refused will include details of how to obtain an appeal form.

You can appeal for a place for your child at more than one school provided you have applied and been refused a place for each school. You will need to complete an appeal form for each school.

Appeals for Reception Year, Year 1 and Year 2

Infant class sizes for Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 are limited to no more than 30 pupils. An appeal for an infant class where an extra child would take the class to over 30 pupils will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances, as the appeal panel’s powers are limited by legislation.

Please read the Parents Guide to School Admissions Appeals for Reception, Years 1 and 2 for further information about the appeal process for infant class appeals.

Appeals for Years 3 to 13

Please read the Parents Guide to School Admissions Appeals for Years 3 to 13 for further information about the appeal process for these year groups.
