We are coordinating a joint public consultation with Purbeck District Council on the draft Poole Harbour Recreation Supplementary Planning Document (2019).
Some recreational activities (including dog walking and cycling) around Poole Harbour are creating disturbance to wading birds protected under European law and adversely affecting estuarine habitats. These activities are connected with the people who live around the Harbour. Further residential development in Poole and Purbeck, around the harbour, is likely to have an adverse effect on the nationally and internationally designated sites. The Poole Harbour Recreation background paper provides further information about the impact upon Poole harbour and evidence which supports the SPD.
The local authorities as the decision makers on planning applications for development within this area have to ensure that there is no adverse impact upon the protected birds. The draft SPD sets out how the Borough of Poole and Purbeck District Council will mitigate the impact of development by taking a contribution from development and using this to provide wardening and other mitigation measures.
The 4 week consultation on the draft SPD commences on Monday 4 February 2019 and closes on Monday 4 March 2019.
Please email any responses to firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘Poole Harbour Recreation SPD’ typed into the subject box. Alternatively postal submissions will also be accepted and should be sent to the address given below.
Paper copies are available in all local libraries, town council offices in Purbeck and in each local authority’s planning reception, during their normal opening hours.
The SPD will replace the Poole Harbour Recreation Interim Strategy which was brought into effect by Borough of Poole on 2 January 2019. The interim strategy is not currently in effect within Purbeck.
