Representatives from affordable housing provider Stonewater and Borough of Poole met at a ground-breaking event this week to celebrate the start of construction on six new affordable homes at Anjou Close in Bearwood, near Poole.
Stonewater is working with Borough of Poole and local contractors Glossbrook Builders on this scheme which, when completed early next year, will provide a cul-de-sac of one purpose-built, two-bedroom bungalow, three two-bedroom houses and two three-bedroom houses, all for affordable rent. Each new home will be built with a large private back garden and allocated parking in front.
Located at the heart of Bearwood, the new homes are well situated for local schools and other amenities, including the community library. The suburb is just over five miles from Poole town centre and provides good transport links for residents.
The provision of affordable housing is a priority for Borough of Poole with almost 1,000 households on the housing register.
“With private rents out of reach for many, people on modest incomes are finding themselves priced out of the Poole area,” says Stonewater’s Executive Director for Development, Jonathan Layzell. “We hope that these new homes at Anjou Close will help combat the severe shortage of affordable housing in the area, allowing more people to find good quality, local accommodation within their budget.”
Funded by Stonewater and a £94,500 grant from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) the new properties will be primarily available to those already local to the area. Each of the new homes, which have been designed to be energy-efficient and economical to run, will be built to a Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 standard.
Councillor Karen Rampton, Cabinet Portfolio for Housing and Community Services, Borough of Poole, says: “We are pleased to be working with Stonewater on this project. Enabling the development of affordable housing in Poole is a top priority for the council and this scheme will help provide six urgently needed properties. Now work has started on site I look forward to seeing the scheme progress.”
Stonewater is also working on a nearby development of 14 homes for rent and shared ownership in Poundbury on the outskirts of Dorchester, which is due for completion in June 2017.
