Local people invited to see latest progress on Poole Bridge

Local people are being invited to see first-hand the progress on the major refurbishment of Poole Bridge.

Interserve Construction Limited is opening its site compound, located next to Poole Bridge on the town centre side, to the public on Saturday 22 July between 10am and 2pm.

Visitors will be able to see the work currently taking place from a vantage point on the Poole Approach span and hear from the contractor's team about the next phase of construction when work starts to take place above the waterline on the Hamworthy side.

John Rice, Engineering Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "We have now overcome the various problems encountered during the piling works to the Hamworthy abutment and the work is now moving on at a pace. The construction of the new abutment has now started and we will soon install the new steel beams on the Hamworthy side which will support the new road deck and carry traffic over the Backwater Channel."

Julian McLaughlin, Head of Growth and Infrastructure, Borough of Poole, said: “We are pleased that the public will be able to get a close up look as the refurbishment of this historic bridge continues. I hope local people will pop down and walk on the Poole Approach span to see the bridge is taking shape."

Darryl Allen, Project Manager for Interserve Construction, said: "Holding this event gives us a great opportunity to offer the local community an insight into what we do, and offer them the opportunity to see up close what we have managed to achieve so far."

Rob Dunford, Interim Director of Dorset LEP, said: “The Port of Poole and surrounding area is an important business region in Dorset and one of the county’s key economic assets. This is a great opportunity for members of the public to come and view the progress being made to one of Dorset LEP’s largest local growth programmes.”

There are no car parking facilities on site but a pay and display car park is located opposite to the site compound on Poole Quay.
