Poole Bridge technical issues resolved

Since Poole Bridge came back into use in January, there have been a number of minor issues with the operating and control systems.

To improve our understanding of the underlying cause of some of these issues, various changes and adjustments were made to the control system, which had minimal impact on road users.

In an effort to resolve a recurring issue with the control system, part of this system was temporarily overridden. This allowed the road gates to remain in a position where they were damaged as the bridge was raised.

Under normal operating conditions the bridge cannot be raised until the gates are clear of the overhead gantry. However, because of the recurring issue in the control system this safeguard was not operational which led to the overhead gantry making contact with the top of the gates during the operation of the bridge.

John Rice, Engineering Manager, Borough of Poole, said: “It was important that we carried out a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding last month’s technical problem which resulted in two of the road gates being damaged. We are pleased to confirm this investigation has now been completed. We’ve identified the cause of the intermittent fault and to avoid a reoccurrence in the future modifications are in the process of being made.

“Poole Bridge is operating as normal and the two new gates will be fitted in due course."
