Measures to tackle anti-social behaviour in Poole Town Centre is taking effect

Targeted engagement work with individuals causing anti-social behaviour in Poole Town Centre is having a positive effect.

Safer Communities Officers have worked with more than 60 people since the Town Centre Public Space Protection Order was introduced on 16 April 2018 with the aim to reduce anti-social behaviour and ensure the town continues to be a safe and welcoming place for residents, businesses and visitors.

A report was presented at the Council’s People Overview and Scrutiny committee meeting on 16 October 2018 where members scrutinised the implementation and progress made to date.

Figures show that since the order was introduced the Council has issued:

  • 87 words of advice
  • 19 advisory letters
  • 3 warning letters
  • 2 fixed penalty notices

The two individuals who have received fines have continued to beg in the town centre, despite being advised not to on numerous occasions and refusing to engage with support services. The two individuals are both housed.

As a result of the engagement and support work:

  • 5 individuals have been supported in to accommodation

Councillor Karen Rampton, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care and Housing, Borough of Poole, said: “The evidence speaks for itself. It shows our approach is working in tackling ASB as well as engaging and supporting individuals on the street and I feel positive about what has been achieved so far. Residents and businesses have told us the town centre feels safer and is more pleasant since the order was introduced. This is largely down to our proactive approach to engage with people and only use enforcement where support and advice is ignored. In the main the majority have accepted advice and support and have not continued with their behaviour.

I would like to thank the Safer Communities team, partners and faith groups who are working tirelessly to give advice to those individuals and encourage them to access help and support services.
