Results announced for Broadstone Neighbourhood Plan Referendum

The results for the Broadstone Neighbourhood Plan Referendum have been declared.

Counting Officer Andrew Flockhart, from Borough of Poole, co-ordinated the count and declared the final result at the Civic Centre in Poole.

The number of votes cast was 2643, representing an overall turnout of 31.17%.

Voters were asked to decide on the question ‘Do you want the Borough of Poole to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Broadstone to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?' The votes were:

Yes      2491 (94.54%)

No         144 (5.46%)

A total of 1142 postal votes were received. The total number of ballot papers rejected was 4.

Cllr Mike Brooke, Ward Member for Broadstone, Borough of Poole, said: It is a very pleasing result and the large turnout reflects the strong sense of community that exists in Broadstone. It has been a long haul getting to this stage and I would like to thank all members of the Neighbourhood Forum for their commitment and to everyone else for their contributions and support."

Neighbourhood Plans give local people the power to shape the area where they live or work. If the majority of those who vote in a referendum are in favour of the draft plan, then the local planning authority must adopt the plan within 8 weeks of the referendum. It will then form part of the statutory development plan for the area. This means it will need to be taken into account when considering planning applications  in the Broadstone neighbourhood area.

Following the majority ‘yes’ vote at referendum, the Broadstone Neighbourhood Plan will go to Council on 26 June 2018 to agree the results of the referendum and agree to 'make' the plan part of the statutory development plan for Poole.
