A racket to success

Two Poole tennis coaches have been recognised for their contribution to the game at the British Tennis Awards hosted by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) last week.

Aaron Russell, who coaches and oversees Borough of Poole’s Branksome Park Tennis facility, which has seen its membership numbers increase by over 400 players in two years, won the ‘Best Community Club in Dorset’ Award. Independent coach Brett Townsend, who uses Council facilities in Poole Park won ‘Coach of the Year’ for developing a community programme in Poole Park which has seen 100 new children and 75 adults enter regular coached activity.

Over the last five years Borough of Poole and the LTA have invested around £280,000 to improve both facilities including resurfacing the courts, new fencing and floodlights. Significant private investment has also been made to the pavilion at the Branksome courts which now hosts a vibrant cafe with public toilet facilities.

The British Tennis Awards celebrate the achievements made by outstanding venues and individuals involved in tennis who dedicate their precious time and energy into the development of the sport in the local community. The awards highlight the incredible achievements of some 20,000 schools, 2,700 clubs, 4,400 coaches, and over 9,700 LTA approved tournaments. The extraordinary contribution of these individuals and venues helps to bring fans and players closer to the game we all love.

Cllr John Rampton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "I am delighted the investment in Poole’s tennis offering is paying off. Our tennis courts engage the community and enable more people to get involved in tennis at an affordable price. Both Brett and Aaron thoroughly deserve these awards."
