Role of the council

In Poole, the council is the only organisation which is run by people elected by you. 42 councillors make up the council which is the top decision-making body responsible for debating the most important decisions, including the yearly budget, Council Tax and appointing the Leader of Cabinet.

In 2001 Poole people made a major decision about how the council would be run. You chose a Leader and Cabinet - designed to make the council more accountable and speed up decision-making. Now each year the council chooses a leader and cabinet who are at the heart of the decision-making process.

Each year all 42 councillors elect a Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Sheriff. They also appoint the Chief Executive, Strategic Directors and Heads of Service Units to ensure that council services are delivered according to overall aims, objectives and budgets set by council.
