Local Code of Governance

The Local Code of Governance seeks to demonstrate the council’s commitment to corporate governance. It sets out the council’s governance arrangements, who is responsible for them, and how this will be reviewed and monitored.

Governance is about ensuring the council is doing the right things, in the right way, for the right people, in a timely, inclusive, open, transparent, honest and accountable manner. The governance framework comprises the systems and processes, and culture and values, by which the borough is directed and controlled, and by which it accounts to, engages with and leads the community. It includes arrangements to monitor the achievement of its strategic objectives and to consider whether those objectives have led to the delivery of appropriate, cost-effective services.

As outlined in the code, an annual review of the effectiveness of the council’s corporate governance arrangements is carried out and any significant weaknesses in the corporate governance arrangements are identified and an action plan produced. The review, called the Annual Governance Statement, can be found in the statement of annual accounts
