Citizenship ceremonies

Coronavirus (COVID-19): change to service

On advice from the government regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), we have had to change the format and limit the amount of people able to attend each ceremony. Once you receive your “invitation letter” from the Home Office please email us on registrars.citizenship@bcpcouncil.gov.uk to request the next available ceremony.

See further information about changes to services.

After you have applied to become a British Citizen, you will receive a letter from us inviting you to book a place at a group citizenship ceremony. This is  where you will be officially welcomed as a British citizen in front of your family and friends. You:

  • must have your ceremony within 3 months of receiving your letter
  • can bring up to 4 guests to the ceremony

Ceremonies for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole residents take place in the Bournemouth Town Hall or Poole Guildhall.

The cost of the group ceremony is included in your citizenship application fee.

At the ceremony

The ceremony is led by a registrar from BCP Registration Services and a speech is given by the local Mayor.

You will have the choice of making an oath of allegiance, or an affirmation if you prefer not to swear by God, with a pledge to promise and respect the rights, freedoms and laws of the UK.

The ceremony lasts about 45 minutes and there will be an opportunity for photographs to be taken at the end. Refreshments will be provided.

What you need to bring

There are 3 things you will need to bring with you to the ceremony:

  • the Home Office approval letter
  • your invitation letter
  • photo ID.

Personal and private ceremonies

If you prefer, you can arrange for a personal and private ceremony which can be held at either Bournemouth or Poole.
