Improvement works to Sandbanks Road, Poole

Work to resurface Sandbanks Road in Poole is due to start on Monday 23 October 2017.

The work, from the Civic Centre up to the end of the railway tunnel, is scheduled to take four days to complete.

To help traffic flow, one lane will remain open to vehicles for much of the time. From 7.30am on Monday 23 October through to 6am on Wednesday 25 October, vehicles will not be able to travel southwards from the Civic Centre roundabout towards Pottery Road. Northbound traffic will be able to pass as normal although delays are expected. This arrangement will allow us to resurface both sides of the carriageway in a phased operation.

In addition, from 7pm on Tuesday 24 October until approximately midnight, Sandbanks Road will be closed at the railway tunnel near Tennyson Avenue to enable the narrow section of road to be resurfaced. Whilst work will continue in the area for a couple of days it is anticipated that the lane closure will be removed during the morning of Wednesday 25 October.

During the works the main diversion route will be along the A35 Commercial Road, Penn Hill Avenue and Canford Cliffs Road.

Mobile variable message signs (VMS) will be used throughout the works to keep road users up to date. Pedestrian access will continue to be provided.

John Rice, Engineering Manager, Borough of Poole, said: “To minimise disruption to road users we have scheduled the works to take place during half term when there is generally 15% less traffic during this period.

"We have decided to restrict night time working and not carry out 24-hour working as this would cause unacceptable disturbance to local residents.

"We recognise that this essential work will cause some unavoidable disruption to road users and would ask motorists to allow extra time for their journeys and use an alternative route when possible."

Cllr Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Planning, Regeneration and Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: “Road and pavement repairs are at the top of our residents’ list of things that most need improving in the local area. We have therefore embarked on an extensive resurfacing programme throughout Poole which includes Sandbanks Road. I would like to thank drivers in advance for their patience while these improvement works are carried out."

The resurfacing programme will also see improvements to Blandford Road, Queen Anne Drive, Magna Road, Alder Road, Wimborne Road and Ringwood Road between now and April 2018.
